ART HISTORY & VISUAL CULTURE
The Applied Arts program aims to give students a solid understanding of visual culture-past and present. The curriculum integrates an overview of essential historical movements with the study of today’s contemporary fine art world. Students will gain a better understanding of the important role that art plays in culture and the evolution art has undergone from ancient to current times.
Direct observation is a key component of MADE’s approach to teaching art history and contemporary art. To complement the classroom experience, students will visit prominent museums and galleries throughout Miami. Seeing contemporary and historic works firsthand, hearing directly from curators, and listening to artists discuss their work, makes the experience of learning about art more personal, memorable, and exciting for students at MADE.
To properly comprehend visual works, a wide spectrum of processes, techniques and methodologies will be examined. All types of visual products are included in the curriculum: painting, drawing, printmaking, film, architecture, furniture and more. This learning expands students’ repertoire of art-related vocabulary and terms.
Students will engage in deep analysis of the historical, sociological, political and religious contexts of famous works. This enables students to progressively develop their critical thinking capacities, improve their ability to analyze and synthesize information, and enhance their verbal and written communication skills. The goal is to empower students to discuss art in relevant terms, research ideas thoroughly, and defend their opinions in a professional manner.
